Missions in Action

At First UMC Sweetwater we take our role as the hands and feet of Christ seriously.  Our mission team is active in the local community, within the system of the United Methodist Church, and around the world through our support of UMCOR, conference advance specials, and missionaries that are connected to our congregation.

There are many ways in which you may participate.  Please begin in prayer! What is God’s role for your place in ministry?

To learn more and participate in any of these current ministries and be made aware of the new opportunities that arise contact:

The Hiwassee District will be collecting Health Kits for the 2021 Hands on Mission project. Check your email for details on how you may help.

Jacqueline is collecting Bibles and travel size toiletries for Fresh Start  Ministries, which is providing services for the homeless.

The First Baptist Church is collecting items to make First Aid kits for use at area playgrounds and splash pads. If you would like to donate Band-Aids, alcohol pads, antibiotic cream, or other items, please see Jacqueline.

We now have a cabinet in the office to hold donated items for the Blessing Box. We appreciate all of you who are bringing donations to help the needy in our community! Non-perishable food items, as well as cleaning supplies and paper goods, are always needed!

Our church is partnering with Sweetwater Elementary School in the Adopt-A-School program. We will be showing appreciation and support to the teachers and staff throughout the school year. If you are interested in helping, please contact our Miss Jacqueline, who is coordinating our efforts. Monetary gifts are appreciated to help us purchase items such as hand sanitizer, lip balm, snacks, etc.

2020 was a challenging year, but First UMC of Sweetwater did not disappoint with donating and helping our local and global missions. During 2020 we assembled 33 Hygiene Kits and 7 Cleaning Buckets for UMCOR to distribute in areas hit by tornadoes and hurricanes. We collected $1,200 for Alexander Memorial Methodist Church in Bishop, VA, to help with their food ministry. Our members shopped for and assembled 30 boxes for Operation Christmas Child. We collected $6,400 for Santa’s Helper, or Christmas Angel Tree, and our Youth volunteered to shop for the children. Throughout the year we kept our Blessing Box well-stocked with food and paper goods for those in need. Finally, we collected $2,100 for the Needy Family Fund, and we gave food boxes to 28 needy families in our local area for Christmas.
We are looking forward to 2021!
